Clinical Effectiveness Department

Clinical Effectiveness is a key part of protecting and improving quality in the NHS. The aim is to make the care we give or the service we deliver more explicitly evidence based, with the goal of achieving better outcomes for patients. It is made up of a range of activities; the most well-known is clinical audit but it also includes, implementation of NICE guidance and other professional standards, development of local guidelines and clinical outcomes monitoring. Together these help guide staff on what is known to be effective and safe when managing patient care.

 
The department also seeks to improve patient care by participation in all eligible national patient surveys, by carrying out local patient surveys and engaging in the national Patient Reported Outcomes Measures Programme.

For our main areas of our work, namely clinical audit and NICE guidance implementation, we are responsible for the following:

• Managing a contemporaneous archive of all registered audit projects and their outcomes
• Guiding staff in all elements of the clinical audit cycle, including sampling, data extraction, basic analysis, report writing and action planning
• Providing bespoke clinical audit training and facilitation
• Co-ordinating a process for ensuring that clinical practice and service delivery meets NICE recommendations, where relevant,
• Providing assurance to the Trust on standards of clinical performance and NICE guidance compliance, and supporting the strategic function of the Clinical Effectiveness Group
