Tobacco Dependence Service
Our mission is to help local people stop smoking and improve their health. In doing this we always aim to best meet the needs of patients. We will do this by working together with patients, staff, local authorities and stop smoking services. Our work will be based on high quality research.
We give specialist support to people who are current smokers.
We offer support to: • Patients in hospital • Pregnant people using the Trust maternity services
We make sure support continues for patients when they leave our care. We do this by working with patients, local stop smoking partners and pharmacies.
NCSCT Very Brief Advice on Smoking (VBA+)
• We visit the patient on wards to provide support to remain smokefree or to quit smoking • We make sure the patient is given the agreed nicotine replacement therapy • We provide a follow up visit on the ward • We ensure their support is continued in their local community
We offer support to pregnant people who: • Have a carbon monoxide reading of above 4ppm at booking appointment • Have said they have recently quit smoking without support
Pregnant people can choose to receive their support at: • Sunderland Royal Hospital • South Tyneside District Hospital Or they can access a local stop smoking service
Both hospital patients and pregnant people are automatically referred to the service via Launchpad, but can opt out.
