The Path to Excellence is a five year transformation programme for South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Our aim is to create outstanding hospital services now and in the future. Our hospitals continue to face considerable challenges, which is why we need to make vital improvements.

The draft case for change outlines the reasons for change and includes our 'working ideas' on how we think we can make these improvements.

Phase One of the Path to Excellence programme focused on Stroke services, Maternity services and Paediatrics services. Phase One is now complete.

Phase Two of the Path to Excellence programme was paused in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We re-started work on Phase Two in February 2021. The impact of Covid-19 has made the reasons for change more, not less, urgent than ever before.
