Since December 2017 we have been carrying out a range of staff engagement activities which have been open to all staff working across South Tyneside and Sunderland.  On this page you can read some of the key materials, briefing presentations and summary reports.

Staff survey (December 2017)

A survey was designed to capture views from frontline staff in South Tyneside and Sunderland on the challenges and difficulties they currently face in everyday service delivery and to seek their ideas on how to further improve the quality of patient care.

710 staff responded to the questionnaire from a total of 4,246 staff who were invited to take part who work in the areas impacted by Phase two. This represents an overall response rate of 16.7%.

The findings from this survey can be viewed below and were shared with our clinical service review design teams:

Staff engagement workshops (March 2018)

To support staff engagement and the development of a clinical narrative and Draft Case for Change, a series of staff engagement workshops were held in March 2018 to gain a better understanding of the issues and challenges faced by staff working within these hospital-based services.

In total, 198 members of staff from both South Tyneside and Sunderland attended these events which were held over three days (19th – 21st March) at The Clarion Hotel, Boldon.

The aim of the staff engagement workshops was to capture the views of frontline staff working across South Tyneside and Sunderland on the challenges and difficulties they currently face in everyday service delivery and to seek their ideas on how we can solve some of these problems to maintain and improve the quality of services and patient care.

The objectives were to ensure staff:

  • feel more informed about the aspirations of the clinical design work streams, understand the challenges being faced and why services need to change
  • feel involved and able to freely voice their hopes, fears, concerns and influence opportunities for change in the future
  • get to have their say about current challenges in their areas of work in order to inform the draft case for change
  • have the opportunity to share ideas about how the current challenges could be met and to help shape future potential solutions
  • ensure staff feedback is gathered and shared with clinical design teams to help shape future option development

Staff engagement events (November 2019)

Over the past 18 months we’ve been busy progressing work on Phase Two of Path to Excellence. We’ve also been busy talking with our system partners about how we can improve care outside of hospital and focus more of our efforts on prevention and keeping people well.  We are running two ‘Join our Journey’ staff engagement events and these are open to all colleagues across the Trust. During the morning you will have the opportunity to:

  • Hear the latest update on Phase Two from the programme team
  • Give your views on work taking place to improve care outside of hospital
  • Give your views on plans for a Trust Health and Wellbeing Strategy
  • Understand work taking place across the region through an ‘Integrated Care System’ to create an NHS which is fit for the future
  • Get involved, give your views and ask us any questions!

Timings: 8am registration for 8.30am start. The event will close at 12.30pm and lunch will be provided to give you an opportunity to network with colleagues across our new Trust. This event is open to all staff working at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust but colleagues must register in advance using the following links:
