Information written on behalf of Dr Stout, FP Tutor
Finding appropriate information to help with FP training is difficult and so I have collated internet links for useful documents for FP Tutors into one place.
The Foundation Guide is a good starting point. The document contains information about:
The role of the FP Tutor, ES and CS
Doctors with Differing Needs – disability, LTFT training, time out of programme, inter-school transfers
The ARCP process
The FP doctor as an employee subject to employee law
It can be found here
Guide_for_Foundation_Training_in_the_UK_September_2019.pdf (copmed.org.uk)
The Foundation Curriculum is updated every few years and there is a new one for 2021. This document contains information on; teaching standards, the E-Portfolio requirements and the ARCP process. It can be found here
New UK Foundation Programme Curriculum 2021 - UK Foundation Programme
.
The FP Operational Guide is similar to the FP Guide but contains more practical guidance on the day-to-day running of a FP training programme. It can be found here
FP Operational Guide 2019 (003).pdf (hee.nhs.uk)
.
The 2019 HEE review of FP training produced 16 recommendations, some of which are pertinent to FP tutors. It can be used as a quality metric for Foundation training and can be used as evidence to support changes you wish to make in your Trust. It can be found here
FoundationReview FINAL for web.pdf (hee.nhs.uk)
.
The 2019 review was followed by a review update in 2020. This document is especially useful for FP teams to measure the quality of FP training but also contains quality metrics for clinical departments and individual supervisors should they wish to use them. It can be found here
Progress Since the Postgraduate Medical Foundation Programme Review.pdf (hee.nhs.uk)
The Gold Guide is a generic document about post-graduate training in general and FP training adheres to these principles. It can be found here
Gold Guide - 8th Edition - Conference Of Postgraduate Medical Deans (copmed.org.uk)
I find it useful to divide FP training into 3 parts:
1. FP doctor as a doctor in training
The FP doctor as a doctor in need of training and assessment. We provide clinical rotations that are quality-controlled to meet the FP curriculum and teaching sessions specifically for FP doctors that meet national standards. We provide a quality-controlled ARCP process at the end of each training year. We support each FP doctor to be able to complete FP training.

2. FP Doctor as an Employee
The FP doctor is an employee of the Local Employing Trust and is subject to employment law. The Local Employer Trust policies and guidance can be found here
Policies, Procedures and Guidance (hee.nhs.uk)
.
3. FP Doctor as a Practitioner
The FP doctor is a practicing doctor and should operate within an effective work environment. We should support FP doctors to be able to work in appropriate working environment. We should work with the Guardian of Safe Working to ensure all posts are of appropriate workload and quality. We should ensure policies and processes are followed to ensure this. Our role is to be an advocate for the FP doctor within the Trust and ensure that concerns are addressed and due process is followed. This is a useful link for workplace advice

Supervisor Support:
HEE have an excellent internet page resource for supervisor support and training and can be found here:
Enhancing supervision for postgraduate doctors in training | Health Education England (hee.nhs.uk)
.
E-learning for health also provide online education resources for supervisors including case studies of struggling FP Doctors and can be found here:
e-LfH Hub
.
Quality metrics are available in the 2019 review and 2020 update and are also available from HEE and can be found here
