The thoughts, opinions and observations of patients and relatives who use our hospital services are very important to us. Our aim is that every patient’s experience is a positive one and understanding what matters most to them and their families is a key factor in achieving this.

We collect patient feedback in many different ways, including national and local patient surveys, the Friends and Family Test, patient interviews and focus groups, as well as any formal complaints received. Each approach provides a valuable source of information that we use to direct and drive improvements across the organisation.

NHS Patient Surveys

The NHS Patient Survey Programme gathers the views of patients about the care they have recently received. It enables us to compare our patients' experiences and compare:

  • performance of different hospitals
  • changes over time
  • variations between different patient groups

Patients are asked questions about what happened to them during their recent healthcare experience. These questions highlight where the problems are and what needs to be done to improve care. Once the results are received we make use of the findings in order to improve our services locally.

Normally the surveys use postal questionnaires and reminder letters, but there will be some changes to how information will be collected in the future. Options will be given to complete the survey online. It is hoped that this will make it easier for patients to provide their feedback.

National surveys include:

  • Adult Inpatient Survey
  • Urgent and Emergency Care Survey
  • Children and Young People's Survey
  • Maternity Survey
  • Cancer Patient Experience Survery
