Who we are

The Pharmacy Service at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust sits within the Clinical Support Directorate.  There are currently two in-patient pharmacies in the Trust – one at South Tyneside District Hospital and the other at Sunderland Royal Hospital, providing a diverse range of operational and clinical services to ensure patients have medicines that are safe, appropriate, evidence-based and cost-effective.  There are also two out-patient dispensaries operated by CHoICE at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Eye Infirmary.

We do this through a number of teams of highly trained pharmacists, technicians, assistants and support staff who specialise in many different aspects of medicines.

Immunoglobulin Prescribing

Since September 2020 all new immunoglobulin requests have had to be referred to the regional assessment panel. This is done by the prescribing consultant using an on-line tool linked to the national database. Details are included the Meditech initiation document.
This process must be followed even when the prescriber deems treatment to be too urgent to wait for approval.

Prescribers should be following the most recent version of the NHSE Commissioning Criteria Policy (link below). It describes all conditions for which Ig is commissioned and provides the detail around the role, dose and place of Ig in the treatment pathway for individual indications alongside possible alternative treatment options for use of Ig in both adults and children.
