The Moving and Handling Service provides training, advice and support to all Trust employees regarding all manual handling and back care issues.

All Manual Handling Training is now preceded with a theory portion that is delivered via e-learning or via classroom presentations and appropriate practical training is provided separately. Classroom-based Theory sessions and Practical training sessions may be booked via the Education and Training Centre.

The Role of the Moving and Handling Service is:

  • To develop and implement moving and handling education and training to all Trust employees,
  • To develop and maintain the Trust’s Manual Handling Policy and related protocols and procedures,
  • To assist managers and give advice on Moving and Handling Risk Assessment,
  • To investigate manual handling incidents/accidents as and when required and recommend changes to practice if need be,
  • To give assistance/advice in the assessment and care of patients presenting with unique or complex handling problems,
  • To give advice and support to staff with manual handling problems,
  • To liaise with Legal Services and Trust solicitors and give professional advice if and when required,
  • To investigate problem areas in relation to moving and handling and produce reports with recommendations for managers,
  • To give advice on the purchase of appropriate manual handling equipment,
  • To act as professional resource and offer advice on all aspects of manual handling and back care,
  • To conduct manual handling audits and produce reports with recommendations.
