Overview

Our Critical Care Units care for patients who are critically ill, providing high dependency care or intensive care depending on the needs of the patient.  We have 16 beds available on the Sunderland site and six on the South Tyneside site.

Rehabilitation after Critical Illness

Some patients need additional assistance towards their recovery after being discharged from the Critical Care Unit. We identify those patients, and our ‘RaCI’ (Rehabilitation after Critical Illness) team start working even before discharge from the Critical Care Unit to try and make recovery as positive as possible. The team works in accordance with NICE guidance and recommendations.

Research

Research is an important part of our work in the Critical Care Unit. We actively recruit to portfolio studies and have partnerships with research groups in Newcastle, London and Belfast. One of our consultant appointments is a joint role between the Trust and Newcastle University, which has embedded original research on the Sunderland site.

Critical Care Outreach Service

The Critical Care Outreach Team are our ‘eyes and ears’ around the hospital. Their roles are to support higher acuity ward based care, help identify clinical deterioration, and to  support safe discharge from critical care.

Education

Multiprofessional education is another key function within critical care.  We train doctors from a number of specialties, student pharmacists, physiotherapists and dietitians. Our Critical Care Outreach Team facilitate the delivery of numerous courses related to the care of the critically ill.
