The South of Tyne Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Service is a direct access service for GPs located across the Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland geographical areas. The primary aim of this Service is to provide assessment, enhanced condition management and symptomatic treatment (on an individual or group basis), for people who have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). We hope to assist in the prevention of longer term and more severe symptoms by providing early intervention. The Service is based on an inter-disciplinary framework and the team consists of a Specialist Occupational Therapist, Specialist Physiotherapist and a Psychologist.
CFS can be a disabling condition which is characterised by severe fatigue that has lasted for at least four months duration. The fatigue experienced within CFS is not due to ongoing exertion, is not substantially relieved by rest and results in a marked reduction in activities. Other symptoms can include poor concentration, muscle pains, headaches and un-refreshing sleep. There are no known curative solutions available for people with CFS, but there are evidence based management strategies, as highlighted within the NICE Guidance for CFS, that are actively utilised in the treatment packages offered to people who access this Service.
The Service is available Wednesday to Friday between 9am and 4pm.
Clinics are held at:
4th Floor of Chester Lodge, Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Referrals into the CFS service can only be made by GP’s in the Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland localities.
