International nurses are Registered Nurses in their own country, but in order to work as Registered Nurses in England they must pass a CBT (Computer Based Test), and IELTs/ OET (International English Language Test). They must also provide all relevant documentation to receive a decision letter from the NMC, this will enable them to proceed to taking part in the NMC Test of Competence (OSCE) at one of the National Test Centres, which include Northurmbira, Oxford Brookes/ Swindon or Northampton University.

In the interim, International Nurses are employed as Band 3 Adaptation Nurses and as such have different roles and responsibilities. 

Prior to the AN commencing their post, the Preceptorship Lead/Practice Education Team will contact the AN to: 

OSCE Preparation Workbook

All international nurses will be provided with a hard copy of the OSCE Preparation Workbook on their first OSCE study day.

The OSCE workbook is designed to complement the OSCE preparation programme and help prepare ANs in clinical practice for their OSCE exam.  AN's should complete the workbook alongside their identified mentor, who should provide opportunities for learning/observation in practice.  OSCE competencies can be signed off and feedback provided e.g. ANTT, IM & Sub-cut injections.
