The Mindray BeneHeart D3 Defibrillator is the new defibrillator that will become the Trust standard wherever manual defibrillation, cardioversion or transcutaneous pacing is required.
The device also has the ability to operate as an Automated External Defibrillator to promote early defibrillation in Cardiac Arrest which can significantly impact on successful outcome for some patients.
An option for transcutaneous pacing and the ability to use capnography monitoring where required comes as standard on this defibrillator.
For further information about this device see sections below.
The new Trust wide manual defibrillator is the Mindray BeneHeart D3 Defibrillator. This will replace our current Phillips Hearstart Manual XL/Xl+/DFM100 Models.
Initial rollout across South Tyneside Hospital is complete. At Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH) this device is now in use in the Emergency Department and ICCU. Further rollout across SRH and satellite locations will follow once relevant staff are trained in the use of this device.
There are currently no plans to replace our smaller stand alone Automated External Defibrillators (such as the Phillips FR2/FR3). Replacement of these devices will be considered at a future date.
Due to current challenging circumstances, the Trust will be adopting a hybrid approach to train staff in the use of the Mindray BeneHeart D3 Defibrillator.
Initial rollout training will be delivered by a combination of e-learning via ESR and clinical briefing sessions.
Level 1 Training
Level 2 Training
Some staff may need to access both levels of training dependent on their role and responsibilities.
Details of how staff access e-learning video resources are provided below. This must be done via ESR to ensure completion of training is recorded for individual staff.
Mindray BeneHeart D3 Defibrillator Training
The Resuscitation Service will provide clinical briefing sessions in Wards and Departments across the Trust.
As rollout proceeds, additional training in the use of the defibrillator will also be integrated in to all relevant Resuscitation Service training and nationally certified intermediate and advanced courses provided within the Trust (e.g. ILS, ALS, APLS etc)

Prompt sheets have been developed in the Trust for key defibrillator functions. These can be printed out but are best viewed in colour.
1. Checking the Mindray BeneHeart D3 Defibrillator
2. Using the device for Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
3. Using the device for AED in children
3. Using the device for Manual Defibrillation
4. Using the device for Cardioversion
5. Using the device for Transcutaneous Pacing
Laminated prompt sheets will be made available on Cardiac Arrest Trolley’s as part of device rollout.
For detailed operating instructions please see the Mindray Operator’s Manual below. A Defibrillator/Monitor Quick Reference Guide is also provided by Mindray.
