We are looking to create a shared governance structure that is the foundation for frontline staff to be involved in decision making. Allowing frontline staff input into shared decision making can influence the care delivered, hiring of staff and nursing practice.

Multi-disciplinary collaboration is essential to ensure staff are engaged and working together in teams to strengthen the governance process. Shared decision making can be used to improve care delivery, address ethical concerns, promote community health and integrate new technology.

Work in this standard workstream is aimed at ensuring:

  • The organisation promotes a multi-professional culture for decision making
  • There is a shared governance structure that supports shared decision making
  • There is evidence of shared decision making / shared governance in practice
  • Nurses use shared governance to promote health in the local community
  • There is a multi-professional process for considering ethical concerns
  • There is a process for front line nurses to be involved in decisions regarding new technology.
  • Nurses have in-put into the hiring process for new staff.
