Leadership should foster the foundation of collaboration among staff and support the Shared Governance environment using Shared Decision Making. Nurse leaders should actively engage with front line staff, be accessible and supportive and seek frontline staff opinions on issues such as resources and cost management.

Work in this standard workstream is aimed at ensuring:

  • Nurse managers accommodate participation in Shared decision making councils
  • Director of Nursing is accessible to front line nurses
  • Nurse managers involve front line nurses in cost management discussions
  • There are methods to support nurses during periods of planned and un-planned organisational change.
  • There is role specific orientation of nurse managers
  • Leadership development activities are offered describe how this enhances the role 
  • Feedback from peers and direct reports is incorporated into the appraisal of nurse leaders
  • Retention strategies for senior nurse leaders
  • The trust has strategies to maintain positive practice environment in the event of exec leadership transition.
