Before requesting to take part in any of our learning, please ensure the following requirements are met.

  • You are compliant with your statutory and mandatory training.
  • You have discussed and agreed with your line manager that your chosen learning is suitable and appropriate for your development requirement.
  • You are given time to complete the e-learning modules and/or attend our workshops. Protected time has been agreed with your line manager.
  • You are motivated to participate and engage in new material and able to apply your learning in the workplace.

"Leadership - A Basic Introduction" e-learning modules (click here for more info - available now)

There are 5 independent e-learning modules which are for individuals who have an interest in Leadership or wish to move to a Leadership/Managerial role. It is not compulsory to complete all modules. Choose only those that are relevant to your developmental needs. To help you to decide which e-learning module is most appropriate for you, please see the descriptives below:

Overview: (replaces 'Engaged Leaders Programme: e-Learning modules)

  • Open to all staff, regardless of band; role and responsibility
  • e-learning modules only
  • All 5 modules do not need to be completed - they are all individual to a specific need
  • Personal choice which module they would like to complete

Objectives of the programme:

These modules contain basic elements of what inclusive leadership looks like and how to model this behaviour. It is for all staff, regardless of banding, who express an interest in developing their leadership skills whether in a formal or an in-formal capacity and who are also looking to move into a leadership role.

Target audience: All staff regardless of band; role and resposibility

You can book yourself on the e-learning via ESR directly. Embedded within the e-learning will be a Journal for you to print; complete and keep, and to revisit at your 6 month follow-up 1-to-1 with your line manager; and an evaluation for you to complete at the end of your learning.

Introduction to Leadership (ITL) 1-day workshop (click here for more info)

Overview:  This 1–day course is suitable for anyone who is just beginning their leadership and/or management journey. 

Whilst this course is available to all staff regardless of your band, it will be most beneficial to staff who have discussed their leadership aspirations during their appraisal and are taking the first step towards moving into a leadership/management role, or those who have already moved into their first leadership/management role.

The course is designed to support your understanding of the characteristics, qualities and attributes of an effective leader, to reflect on your own leadership strengths and to understand the role of leader in teams, and team behaviours.

Objective(s) of programme:

By the end of the course you will have a better understanding of:

Leadership:

  • Qualities, attributes and characteristics of leadership
  • Power – Leadership & Followership
  • Leadership styles and skills – your own leadership skills and development

Self and others:

  • How we interact with others and out impact
  • Motivation – what motivates you and others

Target audience: All staff regardless of band. Staff who have discussed their leadership aspirations during their appraisal. Staff who have just moved into their first leadership/management role.

To undertake this course you need to ensure that:

  • You are fully compliant with Statutory & Mandatory Training.
  • You have an up to date appraisal
  • You have discussed & agreed with your line manager that this is a suitable development/appropriate development opportunity to support your move into a leadership/management role and that you can attend for the full duration of the course
  • You are motivated to attend the course and have a plan for implementing the learning and skills obtained on the course back in your workplace
  • You review your attendance on the course and your implementation with your line manager

Leading Empowered Teams (LET) – A Leadership workshop for Managers (2-day programme)

Overview: The focus of this programme is on empowerment of all staff to help meet the goals and objectives of the Trust and the needs of our customers/ patients. Leading Empowered Teams (LET) is about helping you as an individual to lead in effective ways and is applicable in any setting. Leading Empowered Teams is about development...of self and others.

Objectives of the programme:

  • As a Leader, the impact you have on others.
  • How to create effective relationships by building trust and demonstrating mutual respect.
  • How to lead change effectively by:
    • Recognising how different people react during change and responding appropriately.
  • How to effectively communicate with people by:
    • Articulating expectations; being open and honest,
    • Formulating and responding to ‘killer phrases’
    • Giving effective feedback
  • Developing an action plan using the knowledge, skills and tools learned on the programme to enhance leadership effectiveness.

  • Building effective relationships
  • Leading Change
  • Communication

Target audience: LET is a 2-day leadership programme that is based on the principles of respect, dignity and empowerment. The programme is designed to support new and experienced managers/leaders to build healthy relationships, communicate effectively, lead change and manage the priorities within their team(s).

Do not attempt to reserve a place on this programme via ESR. You must first get permission from your line manager, then contact stsft.leadershipcourses@nhs.net

If you have already attended LET, you do NOT need to attend again, however if you wish to treat it as a refresher you may do so (if it has been 5yrs+ since you completed the course).

To access this workshop you need to ensure that:
•    You are compliant with your statutory and mandatory training and up to date with your appraisal discussion.
•    You have discussed and agreed with your manager that this is a suitable/ appropriate development opportunity and that you can attend for the full duration.
•    You are motivated to attend, to implement any new learning when you return to work and you will review this with your Line Manager.

Presentation Skills:

This in-house presentation skills bespoke session is centred on providing you with the skills and knowledge to develop and deliver presentations that meets the audience’s needs, expectations and achieves a desired result.

Presentation skills training can help individuals to become more aware of their body language, understand their audience and deliver an engaging message that delegates can connect with.

Essential Pre-work:

Before attending your bespoke session, you will have prepared a 2 minute presentation that you will present to us on the day. Suggested topics below.

• A work related topic

• Perfect weekend

• Ideal holiday

• A hobby

• Subject of your choice

You are not required to produce a powerpoint presentation. You can use index cards/paper and bring any props you may have to support your presentation.

Handling Difficult Situations with Compassion:

Our team are here to provide support in response to a high number of requests from staff, particularly from those who are often the first point of contact for patients.

We will provide you with skills and techniques to handle difficult situations safely and with compassion. We will also highlight the importance of looking after your own health and wellbeing.
