We have a dedicated team of Urologists, Specialist Nurses and healthcare professionals who are committed to diagnosing, detecting and treating our patients.
The Urology department at Sunderland has a 24 bed ward. There are two dedicated Urology theatres and other theatres available within the trust. The department has a bespoke unit at Sunderland and Durham for outpatients, flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, transrectal ultrasound and lithotripsy (SRH only). The department is dynamic and have recently led new services including a rapid access unit, one stop clinics and new surgical procedures such as robotic ureterolysis and urolift. The Robotic team have performed over 1,000 robotic procedures since 2013.
The disorders that we treat include those involving the kidneys, the ureters (tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder), the adrenal glands, the bladder and the urethra (the tube that passes urine out of the body from the bladder). In males, a urologist may also treat conditions of the testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis. The field of urology involves the medical management of conditions such as urinary tract infection and prostate enlargement through to the surgical management of conditions such as bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney stones and stress incontinence.
In the case of certain conditions such as cancer of the urinary tract, we may need to work in conjunction with oncologists or radiotherapists. They may also need to collaborate with nephrologists who deal with kidney conditions and gynaecologists who deal with the female reproductive system.
