What we do

The Anaesthetic team at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is the largest single group of consultants and other associated clinicians working in partnership with many other specialties to provide and support a range of key Trust services

We provide comprehensive elective and emergency services to:

  • General Surgery
  • Urology
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Gynaecology & Obstetrics
  • ENT & Maxillo-facial Surgery
  • Paediatric Surgery
  • Ophthalmic Surgery

In addition, we also provide

  • Critical care support in the ICCU with outreach services to inpatients
  • An epidural service to Obstetrics
  • Perioperative Risk Evaluation and Preparation (PREP)
  • Hickman line insertion
  • Block Room facility
  • Acute and chronic pain services to in patients
  • Outpatient chronic pain management
  • Anaesthetic emergency support to A&E
  • Anaesthesia for ECT at Hopewood Park Hospital, Ryhope, Sunderland
  • Anaesthesia for Community Dental surgery
  • Anaesthesia for Endoscopy

The department provides teaching and training to junior doctors, theatre and recovery staff and to paramedics in airway management.

The department is located on the ‘A’ level of Sunderland Royal Hospital and on the ground floor of the main hospital building at South Tyneside District Hospital.
