The neuro-ophthalmology service at STSFT is a consultant-led service based at Sunderland Eye Infirmary (SEI) and is jointly run between ophthalmology and neurology. There are currently two consultants with an interest in neuro-ophthalmology: Miss Wendy Adams who is a consultant ophthalmologist and Dr Gemma Maxwell who is a consultant neurologist. Both run neuro-ophthalmology clinics at SEI on Tuesday afternoons, and sometimes also see people with neuro-ophthalmological issues in their other clinics.
People with range of conditions are seen in the neuro-ophthalmology service, including conditions that can affect the optic nerve, such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and conditions that can affect how the eyes move, for example myasthenia gravis. You may be referred to the clinic in a number of ways, including after attending the eye emergency department or via an optometrist, general practitioner or other hospital specialist. In these clinics, you will be fully assessed and examined. You may require some further tests, either in SEI itself, or scans or other procedures that may need to be carried out at Sunderland Royal Hospital. After this assessment, a treatment plan will be agreed with you.
