What we do

Oncology clinics are available at South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal to provide advice and treatment in the management of cancer.

Clinics are available for a broad spectrum of common cancers specifically lung, breast, urology, colorectal, upper GI and head and neck cancers. Consultant medical and clinical oncologists are employed by Newcastle Hospitals and work collaboratively with South Tyneside and Sunderland Cancer Teams each visiting one or two days per week.

The Oncology Service is further supported by a consultant nurse in oncology and acute oncology nurse practitioners who work closely with the c chemotherapy day units, cancer clinical nurse specialists and wider clinical teams.

Oncology treatments available in the local hospitals are principally provided as day case in the form of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other novel treatments and supportive treatments.

The Oncology Service is research active with many clinical trials available to patients across the range of cancer types.

Staff are based at South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal, working predominantly in outpatient departments and chemotherapy day units. Cancer of Unkown Primary (CUP)

The Cancer of Unknown Primary service at South Tyneside District Hospital offers support to inpatient teams caring for patients with a new cancer diagnosis where there is no obvious primary cancer diagnosis based on a number of investigations as per the diagnostic pathway (CUP pathway available on the intranet).

The CUP Multi-Disciplinary Team have meetings once per week to discuss cases which meet the CUP pathway criteria, in order to offer guidance for ongoing investigations, management and care. It may be appropriate for patients to then be referred to another cancer site specific team, have community support or ongoing input from the CUP team, depending on the outcomes of further investigations.
