The department of Metabolic Medicine provided key specialist services within Diabetes, Endocrinology and Lipid disorder management for patients from Sunderland, North Durham, Easington, Washington and South Tyneside.
The Department comprises a dedicated Out-Patient and In-Patient Area/Ward.
Ward D40 This is the main ward for patients with primary diabetes or endocrine related problems at Sunderland Royal Hospital. We have established an In-Patient Team dedicated to supporting patients and staff.
Ward 5 This is the main ward for patients with primary diabetes or endocrine related problems at South Tyneside General Hospital. We have established an In-Patient Team dedicated to supporting patients and staff.
Out-Patient Services Several general and dedicated Sub-Speciality Clinics have been established within the unit and in association with colleagues from allied services.
As a research active department we keenly support local, regional and national research projects with Sunderland University, National Research Centres and have established links with National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
