What we do

The CMI team gives advice to Trust staff and neighbouring GPs on the investigation and treatment of infection, including Infection Prevention & Control and antimicrobial stewardship. We work closely with the laboratory in Gateshead to ensure that the diagnostic service meets the needs of the Trust. 

We can offer face to face ward consultations for patients with complex, unusual or tropical infections and can offer follow-up for these patients in our outpatient clinics.

We work across both sites - usually one at STDH on a rotational basis and others at SRH.

How you can contact us

  • During the day Monday - Sunday phone switchboard to speak to the consultant on call for clinical advice
  • If you want to speak to a specific person during office hours, contact details are in the online telephone directory
  • After 5pm Monday - Sunday phone switchboard and ask to speak to the on call microbiologist. We have a combined rota with GHNT so you may be put through to a Gateshead microbiologist. Please do not use the out of hours on call service for things that should be sorted during the day
