The department of Cardiology provides a full range of outpatient and inpatient services for cardiac patients in our local population as well as some specialised services for patients from other areas of the North East of England.

Our Clinical Areas

We provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for both inpatient and outpatient Cardiology patients which are based around four main clinical areas.

Chest pain unit

  • 10 bedded unit for the assessment of patients with acute cardiac symptoms

Coronary care unit

  • 7 bedded unit for the treatment of patients with acute cardiac conditions

Ward B22

  • 19 bedded ward for treatment of patients with cardiac illnesses

Cardiac Catheter Labs

Two highly equipped cardiac catheter labs provide a high volume of diagnostic and interventional procedures. Common procedures undertaken include

  • Diagnostic cardiac catheterisations
  • Coronary angioplasty (stenting procedures)
  • Permanent pacemaker procedures

Non invasive cardiology

We provide patients with a full range of non invasive cardiac assessment in several clinical areas. These include:

  • Exercise testing
  • Holter ECG monitoring
  • Implantable monitor assessments (ILR)
  • Pacemaker/Defibrillator assessments
  • Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE)
  • Transoesophageal echocardiograms
  • Cardiac CT
  • Nuclear Medicine (MPS scans)

Education and Teaching

One of our priorities is the commitment to training of all healthcare students. We provide formal and informal training opportunities on a regular basis and encourage participation in all our clinical activities.

As a research active department we are involved with local, regional and national research projects. We collaborate with Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham Universities in addition to national research centres and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).
