Outpatient Cardiology - STDH

Overview

The Outpatient Cardiology Team at South Tyneside District Hospital is responsible for carrying out a wide range of diagnostic tests and treatments for people with cardiac disease and other heart problems.

When you visit our department, you are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team that may include general cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons on the medical staff, as well as specially trained cardiology nurses, diagnostic imaging physiologists and cardiographers. The physician on the medical staff also collaborates with your own GP.

  • Routine electrocardiograms (ECG)
  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitors
  • Ambulatory cardiac monitor, including; holter tape, ZIO patch and implantable loop recorder (ILR)
  • Routine echocardiogram
  • Complex echocardiograms (TOE’s, bubble studies and contrast studies)
  • Exercise tolerance tests
  • Myocardial perfusion imaging
  • Pacemaker follow up
  • Rapid access chest pain clinic
  • Palpitation clinic
  • General cardiology clinics
  • Pre assessment clinics
  • Valvular heart disease surveillance clinic
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) clinic

In-hospital outpatient services

Where you can find us

Cardiology Outpatients department at South Tyneside is based on the ground floor next to the main Outpatients department.

Access to Cardiology Outpatients Department can be via Out-patients department, turning left on the main corridor after you pass reception 3 in out-patients or via the main entrance, turning left onto the main corridor and Cardiology Outpatients is at the very end of corridor.

Coronary Care - Ward 6 STDH

What we do 

We are a 28 bedded general medical ward with a sub specialty of Cardiology incorporating four coronary care beds. We provide care to a range of medical patients and perform inpatient angiography, pacemakers and cardioversions.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Service

The Cardiac Rehabilitation service at South Tyneside Hospital is able to offer both inpatient and outpatient/community services to patients residing in South Tyneside. We are able to offer a cardiac rehabilitation service for patients both in the acute and community setting in convenient accessible settings such as:

  • South Tyneside District Hospital – inpatient review
  • South Tyneside District Hospital - Outpatient Cardiology department
  • South Tyneside District Hospital - Outpatient Physiotherapy Gym
  • Palmers Community Hospital - Outpatient Physiotherapy Gym
  • Telephone / Video Consultation
  • Home Visits

Inpatient care

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Service is able to offer inpatient education & support to those who have suffered an acute cardiac event or are listed for elective cardiac surgery.

  • My Heart app – internet based Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Review after discharge via telephone / in clinic / at home

Outpatient care

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Service is able to offer outpatient support to those who have experienced a recent cardiac event or have had elective cardiac surgery.

  • Symptom review and providing individualised management plans
  • Optimisation of medical therapy
