What we do 

We provide support and guidance to the Trust’s cancer site-specific services and ensure that these comply with mandated standards for the safety and quality of care, as assessed by the National Quality Surveillance (formerly Peer Review) process.  

The department also supports implementation of the national cancer strategy and associated improvement programmes with a focus on service development and the implementation of best practice pathways in line with national guidance.

The department is responsible for working with teams to ensure patients are seen and receive treatment within agreed national Cancer waiting times standards. We are responsible for the co-ordination of Cancer Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to ensure that all necessary information is available to enable clinicians to make informed decisions regarding treatment for patients. 

The department is also responsible for the collection and submission of all mandated national cancer datasets including:

  • Cancer Waiting Times Dataset (CWT)
  • Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset  (COSD)
  • National Bowel Cancer Audit (NBCA)
  • National Lung Cancer Audit (NLCA)
  • National Prostate Cancer Audit (NPCA)
  • National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit (NOGCA)
  • National Head & Neck Cancer Audit (HANA) 
  • Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments Dataset (SACT)
