Press release
South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust believes that staff appraisal for doctors and hospital dentists is a professional process of constructive dialogue. During which the person being appraised has a formal, structured opportunity to reflect on their work and to consider how their effectiveness might be improved. It is important that the appraisal process is seen as a peer review process but not as a performance review.
Below you will find a collection of guidance and supporting information to help you to navigate the process, including the Trust's Staff Appraisal Policy (Medical and Dental) which applies to all career grade doctors (with a prescribed connection to the Trust who wish to maintain a licence to practise) and hospital dentists.
Please ensure that you are familiar with not only the Trust Policy but also with your Royal College's specific requirements (as these are the standards you will be measured against for your revalidation).
All queries relating to any aspect of the medical appraisal and revalidation process should be directed to the Medical Revalidation Team who can be contacted by email: stsft.revalidation@nhs.net telephone: 0191 5410036 or internal ext: 40036
It is mandatory for all appraisals to be undertaken using the Clarity Appraisal Toolkit which provides:
To enrol in Clarity please contact the Medical Revalidation Team (on the contact details provided above).

Dr Karen Horridge Consultant Paediatrician (Disability) South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
karen.horridge@nhs.net
"As a clinician working with disabled children and young people for almost 30 years, ethical decision-making is of fundamental importance to ensure the best and equal outcome opportunities for everyone."
Dr Mark Lee Consultant and Clinical Lead in Palliative Care St Benedict’s Hospice and Centre for Specialist Palliative Care mark.lee5@.nhs.net "I have been a consultant in Specialist Palliative Care in Sunderland for 15 years. My clinical role is split between St Benedict’s Hospice and City Hospitals Sunderland. I have developed a particular interest in neuro-palliative care patients and run a weekly clinic at St Benedict’s Hospice. As well as supervision of staff and teaching, I also remain active in research. I am a member of the End of Life Steering Group at STSFT. As a doctor ethics is an integral part of all the decisions we make. I have a particular interest in ethical issues at the end of life and, in particular, I have looked in depth at the arguments around Assisted Dying."
Mrs Deepali Varma Director of Research and Consultant Ophthalmologist
Deepali.Varma1@nhs.net
"I sub-specialise in medical retina at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. I am an executive member and speciality group lead for ophthalmology at the NIHR Clinical Research Network, North East and North Cumbria.
My fascination for clinical ethics stems from the opportunity for open discussion of ethical dilemmas and structured learning."
Elizabeth Tarala St6 Acute Medicine Doctor
Elizabeth.tarala1@nhs.net
"I am a less than full time junior doctor in the specialty of Acute Medicine. Acute Medicine provides the immediate assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting to hospital with an acute illness.
My work is split between EAU (Emergency Admissions Unit) and SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care). Acute Medicine sees varied presentations representing lots of different medical specialties.
Clinical ethics is integrated into our practice and decision making process. Making the ‘right’ decision for and with the patient is important but it isn’t always easy and sparked my interest in this area."
Carly Brown Lead Clinical Research Nurse/ NIHR 70@70 Senior Nurse Research Leader carly.brown@stft.nhs.uk "In my role as Lead Clinical Research Nurse I am responsible for the line management of the Clinical Research Delivery Team at South Tyneside District Hospital. My team and I support the delivery of clinical trials and studies across many specialities. We are involved in the patient journey from initial trial set up through to seeking fully informed consent, delivering trial treatments and interventions and conducting study visits, alongside Principal Investigators, ensuring that studies are delivered in line with ethically approved protocols and research governance regulations. In my role as NIHR70@70 Senior Nurse Research Leader I am part of a 3 year national programme of 70 Senior Research Nurses and Midwives who are driving Nursing and Midwifery research forward across the NHS.
I am currently working closely with members of the senior nursing and research teams to further develop our Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional research infrastructure. My experience in clinical research; considering ethics on a daily basis, initiated my interest in clinical ethics. As a nurse I am an advocate of fair and equitable care for all patients. I am passionate that good ethical practice is upheld and that patients have access to the best evidence based healthcare and treatments."
The Trust’s Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development (DoHR) and Medical Director (MD) met with the British Medical Association (BMA), and in line with some other local organisations we have taken the decision to allocate the funding for the 2020 local Clinical Excellence Award (CEA) scheme without running a local award round. Given the pressures of COVID-19, and the resource normally required to run the local awards scheme, the Trust considers the option of salary distribution without application more appropriate for the 2020 round. This is in line with national guidance.
As usual, only substantive NHS consultants are eligible, but by local agreement with the BMA the Trust expanded the salary distribution to all substantive consultants in post as of 1 April 2020. This does not include national award holders. You will receive the additional payment in your September salary. This will be a one off salary payment, separate from any existing clinical excellence awards that you may hold.
The Trust expects to run a CEA round in 2021, subject to national guidance. If any individual has questions then please contact me directly.
Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards

Clinical Excellence Awards: application form - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
If you are intending to submit an application for either a new award or renewal of an existing award, it is important that you send your completed CVQ to any of your nominating Colleges, Faculties or Specialty Associations as soon as possible.
It is also important that you ensure that you complete your online application by Monday 15th February 2021 (even though the official date is 18th March 2021). This is to ensure that the Trust has time to complete its assessment and reference for you. We are not able to complete that until you have signed off your application on line.
Kind regards
Paul McAndrew Deputy Medical Director
