What we do :

We provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary library and information service for staff and students on placement or studying at South Tyneside and Sunderland hospitals as well as community and other out-of-hospital staff.

The service covers both libraries at Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital. Staff at any STSFT site can join the library and use either location. Sunderland Royal library is staffed Monday to Friday, and the library at South Tyneside is staffed Monday to Friday, providing access to information services and resources including books, journals, computers, document supply, interlibrary loans, literature searches and enquiry services.

We hold over 8,000 items on Medical, Nursing, Health and NHS topics and a developing collection of lighter reads to help staff relax by reading for pleasure. The library catalogue can also be accessed from any PC in the Trust. Please suggest any clinical resources the library should purchase here.

In the IT Suite at Sunderland, there are 28 computers available and 11 individual study spaces, where you use your own device. There are also six computers in the library at South Tyneside. They are all networked and provide access to the internet for study and recreational use as well as Microsoft packages. Scanning and printing facilities are also available at Sunderland.

  • At Sunderland we have a group study room available with 8 computers. Please ask staff for access.
  • There are also laptops available for loan to use anywhere in the Education Centre.
  • Remember electronic resources are available 24/7 via the library services pages, see below for details.
  • There is also free WIFI if you wish to use your own devices.
  • Displays - we have regularly changing displays at both Sunderland and South Tyneside, showcasing resources to support current health initiatives. If you have a health initiative you’d like to promote, we’d be happy to consider it.
  • We have a small but growing collection of light reading at both sites, fiction and non-fiction, aimed at helping staff read for pleasure away from the stresses of work. Book suggestions are always welcome.

OpenAthens

OpenAthens Self Registration – Sign up here for an OpenAthens password access to NHS electronic resources. These free resources are available through the National Core Content deal to eligible NHS staff and students on placement. Access is protected by the Athens Authentication System. This means all users require a valid NHS Athens account.

Please register with your NHS or University email address as this speeds up account set up and will enable you to access the resources more quickly.

Please do not re-register if you think you may already have a current NHS OpenAthens account. Contact the library stsft.libraryservices@nhs.net who can check this for you.

Once a personal account has been set up access is available 24/7 from any device at work or at home.

Already Registered? Login here (where you can also change your email address or password): OpenAthens

Important Information

Please be aware that 1000s of publications are available using the OpenAthens authentication system. However not all articles are full text as not all journals are subscribed to by the NHS. If you are studying via a University you will also have access to their resources electronically via your student login details.

So remember just because you see the OpenAthens login doesn’t mean you can use your passwords to access the information. Details of availability appear as a blue hyperlink next to the abstract or the journal title.

Moving to another NHS Organisation?

Whilst the National Core Content Databases and journals are the same across the NHS, each organisation has a set of local resources linked to their OpenAthens Accounts. If you move to another Trust it is in your interest to make use of these. You can request to transfer your account to your new Trust by logging in to OpenAthens. Here you can change your password, email address and organisation.

Forgotten your username and/or password?

Please contact the library stsft.libraryservices@nhs.net who will be happy to check for you.

Also you can now reset your own password via the ‘my account’ option when logged in with a personal OpenAthens account.
