What we do

The function of the Child Health Information Service is to provide a comprehensive local record of a child’s public health (screening, immunisation, safeguarding and other health protection or health improvement interventions including the 0-5 Healthy Child programme) and their community based healthcare. Child Health Information Services and Systems play a critical role in the scheduling, recording and monitoring of public health programmes, including vaccination delivery and immunisation status of children in England.

One of the core functions of the service is to maintain a consistent record of demographic changes for each child registered on the Child Health Information System, keeping historic records in a way that allows them to be interrogated at any time. It provides the facility to track any child or group of children by maintaining a record of name and address changes for each child registered on the system. This can be a challenge when information needs to routinely be shared across multi-disciplinary community teams within a trust and to be updated both to, and from, multiple Primary Care settings. It is however vital both for immunisations records and for safe-guarding that these demographic changes are recorded in a timely way and shared across the system.
