The ‘National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’ (NICE) principal role is to provide patients, health professionals and the public with authoritative and reliable guidance in relation to the use of health technologies, the clinical management of specific conditions, and the safety and efficacy of interventional procedures.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust acknowledge that NICE guidance characterises good clinical practice and effective use of resources.  The Trust has a responsibility for implementing NICE guidance in order to ensure that patients receive the best and most appropriate treatment and that NHS resources are used in an efficient and cost effective way. 

Healthcare professionals and practitioners are expected to take NICE guidelines fully into account, alongside the individual needs, preferences and values of their patients or the people using their service.

The Clinical Effectiveness Department (CED) has an important role in supporting the implementation and monitoring of NICE guidance and ensuring that the Trust meets its NICE obligations. The CED team have a NICE dedicated email address: STSFT.NICEReturns@NHS.NET

Main responsibilities include:

  • identifying new guidance via the NICE website on a monthly basis
  • ensuring NICE guidance is disseminated to relevant Clinical Governance Leads / Clinical Leads
  • supporting the network of Clinical Governance Leads in advising and resolving matters related to NICE guidance implementation
  • supporting the Clinical Governance Lead / Clinical Lead in completing a baseline assessment or gap analysis
  • maintaining the Trust NICE database 
  • providing the Clinical Governance Steering Group with reports on Trust-wide NICE compliance, including any decisions not to implement NICE guidance
