In South Tyneside Children’s Integrated Therapies comprises Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy Services for children.

The Speech and Language Therapy team work with children and young people who have a range of speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties. Difficulties can be developmental or acquired. We work in partnership with a range of other professionals including doctors/paediatricians, nurses, health visitors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and teachers/education support staff. The SALT Team have specialist skills and expertise to assess and diagnose difficulties and will then work with the child and carer to plan the best way forward to support their needs, offering advice and therapy when appropriate.

The service can help with the many issues which can impact on communication ability such as delayed and disordered language development, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Hearing Impairment, speech sound difficulties, stammering (dysfluency) and voice problems. We work with children with additional needs which include physical and learning difficulties e.g. cerebral palsy and children with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

Clinics are provided at Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre, Stanhope Parade Health Centre and Palmer Community Hospital. We also work in other locations: mainstream and specialist schools and units, Nurseries and Children’s Centres and children’s homes, as appropriate.

We offer an open referral system for children across the age range 0-18 years. Referral forms can be obtained from our Department base.
