Message from Dr Allistair Dodds:
Dear Colleagues,
As the new academic year approaches, I write to ask if you would consider volunteering to be a clinical mentor for a Newcastle University year four medical student?
It can be both fun and rewarding to have a student in clinic, they often bring a new perspective to the environment, usually they're full of enthusiasm and eager to learn. Having a student is an excellent way of showcasing your speciality, facilitating recruitment to your department, and encouraging the most able to apply to STSFT for foundation positions in the future.
The time commitment is very modest, you need to identify one clinic a week for them to attend. They'll need four pieces of electronic feedback per year (two per term)- a simple, quick and easy online form. You don't need to worry if your speciality fits - if you can take a history, perform a physical examination, and have a good understanding of the professional behaviours needed to work as a medical professional, you already have the skills we need. The academic (knowledge based) activity is provided in a separate module, and the university staff provide regular tutorials.
This is a great opportunity to get into undergraduate teaching, a stepping stone to University sessions, portfolio diversification and recognition as a clinical teacher. Please contact me or our wider team if you have any questions, or would like to be involved. You can also Click here for more information.
I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you the team.
With best wishes,
Dr Allistair Dodds
