We have listened to what you have told us about our NHSP incentives. We plan to make some changes with effect from 1 December. This will replace all of our current schemes and includes shifts worked today. We will review things again at the end of January.

We are also pleased to say that we have lots of nursing staff joining us in the coming weeks and months. We have over 200 nurses who will start work with us soon. This includes 60 nurses who will start work with us in December. 50 more will join us in January. We are working hard to get these people into your teams as quickly as possible.

Thank you all for your hard work and commitment to patient care.

£250 incentive scheme open to all acute and community teams

A new £250 incentive scheme will start on 1 December. This will be open to all staff who work additional NHSP shifts on any acute wards and departments at South Tyneside District Hospital, Sunderland Royal Hospital and in our community teams. This includes:

  • Healthcare assistants
  • Registered nurses
  • Specialist nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Maternity support workers
  • Midwives
  • Operating department practitioners
  • Healthcare scientists Inc. Pharmacists
  • Ward Clerks
  • Allied health professionals

This is open to all staff (Bands 2 – 7). We will pay you at the top of your usual band for any additional shifts worked. It means you can work any additional shifts in your own team as required. These shifts will still qualify for the £250 incentive.

  • For Trust employees who work NHSP shifts. You will get £250 if you work an extra 37.5 hours in six weeks.

  • For bank only staff who work NHSP shifts. You will get £250 if you work an extra 75 hours in six weeks.

This is up to the value of £750. It includes early, late, long day or night shifts. Please see below for the incentive pay dates. Please note: this is only for the incentive payments. Pay for hours worked will still be weekly from NHSP.

£50 Allocate on Arrival (AoA) incentive

The Trust’s £50 Allocate on Arrival (AoA) incentive will continue. This is for any shifts booked via the NHSP wards at South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital. It will also include ICAR and St Benedict’s Hospice and other community areas, if we need to at times of pressure.

AoA is open to all Healthcare Assistants and Registered Nurses (Bands 2 – 7). We will pay you at the top of your usual band for any additional shifts worked.

These shifts will also count towards your £250 incentive payment. There is no limit on the number of AoA shifts you can work. Please see below for the incentive pay dates. Please note: this is only for the incentive payments. Pay for hours worked will still be weekly from NHSP.

We know that staff who direct book NHSP shifts often still have to move due to pressures. In these cases, we cannot pay the £50 incentive payment due to the way the system works. We know this feels unfair. To try and fix this, we will make sure there are more AoA shifts available for staff to book. In order to get the £50 incentive, you MUST book via the NHSP ward rosters.

£50 incentive for Allocate on Arrival (EICO) shifts

A new £50 incentive for Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) will start on 1 December. This is for HCAs who have done the Trust’s Enhanced Interactive Care and Observation (EICO) training. You must have the Band 3 code as part of your NHSP profile. You must book these shifts via the NHSP EICO Ward rosters.

We will pay you at the top of a Band 3 for any EICO shifts worked. These shifts will also count towards your £250 incentive payment. There is no limit on the number of EICO shifts you can work. Please see below for the incentive pay dates. Please note: this is only for the incentive payments. Pay for hours worked will still be weekly from NHSP.

  • Staff must be registered with NHSP.

  • The £250 incentive is up to the value of £750 for shifts worked in the qualifying period.
  • Anyone who cancels a shift with less than 12 hours’ notice will have to recommence their shift count from 0 again to qualify for the £250 incentive.
  • Please note – all incentive payments are subject to the usual tax and national insurance deductions.
  • Allocate on Arrival and EICO Allocate on Arrival shifts MUST be booked via the NHSP ward and EICO NHSP rosters in order to be eligible for Allocate on Arrival incentives.

Emergency Department HCA shifts

Due to current operational pressures and increased pressure in the Emergency Departments (ED), HCA shifts have been added to the allocate on arrive NHSP ward rosters. Staff who pick up these shifts will work in the Emergency Department and support the team with ambulance handovers.

This is fantastic opportunity to develop skills in a new area as well as:

  • Building confidence in dealing with complex patient care
  • Gain experience in a different clinical setting and knowledge of a specialist service
  • Gain a clear understanding of the patient pathway
  • Add valuable experience to your CV when applying for other roles, promotion or courses.

These shifts are paid at top point of a Band 3 and staff who pick up these shifts, will also receive the £50 per shift allocate on arrival incentive.

Staff will be paid weekly at Band 2 for the shifts worked, the difference in pay between Band 2 and Band 3 and the £50 shift incentive will be paid on the dates outlined below.

In order for NHSP to be able to calculate shifts that are eligible for the incentive, timesheets worked within the qualifying period must be authorised and released within the timeframe below (see payment schedule below).
