The counter fraud team has been notified of a potential fraud against NHS patients.

Two genuine NHS patients in the North-East have received telephone calls from a person purporting to be an NHS doctor.

He knew their correct names and dates of birth and he tried to sell them equipment which was relevant to the treatment they are receiving from the NHS. He also asked for their bank account details but none were given.

It is not known how this information was available to the caller but there are no data breaches that we are aware of.

Although this is not a fraud against the NHS, we are providing this information in case you wish to remind patients, most likely via your social media platforms, that the NHS would not contact them and ask for money or bank details in this way.
