The following policies have recently been ratified by the Trust’s Policy Committee.   Please take the time to review those which may be relevant to your role.

Venous Thromboembolism Risk Assessment and Prophylaxis Policy

The purpose of this policy is to provide a framework for venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment and prophylaxis for patients admitted to South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust aged 16 years and over. The Trust Venous Thromboembolism Group has coordinated a comprehensive review of practice and processes across the organisation and amalgamated legacy documents from the Trust’s predecessor organisations:

The material changes within the new policy include:

  • standardising internal VTE risk assessment processes across the two hospital sites;
  • updating the clinical management of patients at risk of VTE reflecting NICE guidance recommendations;
  • adding a new section on contraindication to chemical and mechanical thromboprophylaxis; and
  • revising the role and responsibilities of the Trust Venous Thromboembolism Group.

Do Not Attempt CPR Policy

This policy provides a framework for DNACPR decisions in the Trust.  This includes:

  • the identification of patients who are not to be resuscitated in the event of a cardiopulmonary arrest;
  • to ensure that DNACPR decisions in such patients are clearly identified; and
  • the decision is documented and communicated to all staff directly involved with the patient’s care.

This policy applies to all staff, who by virtue of their role, will be involved in the discussions and / or documentation about DNACPR decisions for patients whose care is provided by the Trust, and who are working on behalf of the Trust.

The policy replaces the policies in place in the legacy organisations.  The material changes within the new policy include:

  • changes in the legal and ethical positions in England;
  • reflecting the move to electronic patient records; and
  • reflecting the extension of the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and the development of that training framework.
