NICE guidance has been published highlighting the potential inaccuracies of automated ABPI machines. The guideline recommends against the use of automated machines, due to the potential for overestimated readings, meaning peripheral arterial disease may not be picked up and patients may be inappropriately placed into compression therapy.

Manual ABPI measurement is instead recommended, using a handheld Doppler device.
