Today is International HR Day! We want to give a huge shoutout to all of our incredible HR, OD and OH colleagues working behind the scenes every day to keep #TeamSTSFT running smoothly! Scroll down to meet some of our amazing colleagues, and keep an eye for them being featured on our social media channels across the day.
Kath Griffin, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development has recorded this special message.
How long have you worked for the Trust? 7 years (but I have worked in the NHS for over ten years)
What does your day-to-day role include? No two days are the same in the R&B team. From processing and reconciling our payrolls, to speaking to staff about their pensions, to setting up expense accounts and approving claims - everyday there's something different to do.
What do you like most about your job? Working in the R&B team, although it can be hectic and super stressful at times, ultimately is a really rewarding job to have. A lot of people don't realise the amount of work that goes into ensuring staff are paid on time each month, and so it can be a huge relief when we complete a payroll cycle, all be it with the addition of a few grey hairs!
How long have you worked for the trust? Over 2 years
What does your day to day role include? HR is an ever-changing environment which means that no two days are the same! This is great for me as it keeps me interested and continuously allows me to gain or enhance my current skills and knowledge. My main day-to-day role includes delivery of training which can either be face-to-face or via Teams, collating staffing data and information, building and configuring systems, checking in with managers via our roster clinics, and assisting colleagues with any queries via phone, email or in person.
What do you most enjoy about your job? There are many things to love about my role within HR! I spend a lot of time out and about across all Trust sites, meaning I get to meet new people on a regular basis and start to build effective working relations. There are times when the role can be challenging, however I look at this as a positive as it improves both my individual and team performance by overcoming challenges. It helps to build resilience and allows time for self-reflection. As HR spans over a wide range of teams with different specialties, we regularly support one another, share skills and knowledge and this makes you feel valued being part of the wider team.
How long have you worked for the Trust? Over 12 years - I initially started as an Admin Apprentice within the Recruitment Services Team. After completion of my apprenticeship I was successful in gaining full time employment, working as an HR Assistant. I then progressed into the role of Recruitment Services Officer and after that, moved in to my current position as Senior Recruitment Services Officer.
What does your day-to-day role include? One of my main duties is to support recruitment campaigns linked to our International Nurses. I work closely with our Nursing Workforce team and NHS Professionals, ensuring all documentation is issued and compliance checked, in line with NHS standards. I also apply for certificates of sponsorship to allow for the Nurses to apply for their work permits.
I also work to ensure our Nurses receive advances and their relocation packages are agreed and booked with local estate agents, as well as booking any occupational health appointments, uniform requests, and speaking to local banks to arrange for our Nurses to open their accounts.
Once our Nurses arrive in the UK, I’m also responsible for conducting all right-to-work checks and ensuring our staff records and updated. I also track our Nurses until they are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council to make sure all visa and immigration requirements are met.
What do you like most about your job?
Recruitment Services is very fast paced and I enjoy working alongside a number of different departments throughout the Trust, to ensure a seamless recruitment journey for our candidates. This has given me the opportunity to build strong working relationships with a number of colleagues across the Trust. The most rewarding part of my role is seeing the International Nurses arrive in the UK beginning their new adventure with South Tyneside and Sunderland Trust, whilst also ensuring a smooth transition into their role.
