An opportunity has arisen for an experienced registered nurse who is looking for an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge within the specialist field of diabetes to cover maternity leave for a period of no less than 9 months as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse (Band 6).

This post will allow the successful candidate to advance their knowledge in diabetes and the long-term health needs of adults. You will need to have a demonstrated an interest in diabetes supported by recent experience or qualifications. 

The post holder will provide clinical expertise for both in inpatient and outpatient care, and will join a dynamic team based at South Tyneside Hospital.  The applicants must be committed to providing an excellent standard of patient care, and also to their own professional development. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and be supportive and open to new initiatives. As a growing service meeting the needs of an expanding local population, the service provides a number of routine and specialist services; the successful candidate will receive training in the needs of the team to support patients care within the trust. 

The current team provide initial and ongoing education with a comprehensive induction into Out Patient activity, e.g. treatment escalation, insulin initiation,  and commencement of new technologies to promote patient empowerment and aid self-management. In-patient activity will include reviewing patients on surgical or other medical wards providing specific diabetes input and advocacy to other specialist teams, a dedicated in-patient diabetes ward round with consultants will provide additional learning opportunities. The role will also enhance the post holder's ability in consultation and shared decision-making skills.
