The countdown has begun to this year's International Clinical Trials day, which will see the Trust mark the event with a session filled with talks and topics.

Our Research and Innovation Team will welcome people to the Lecture Theatre of the Education Centre at Sunderland Royal Hospital on Friday, May 20, from 11.45am to 4pm. 

The Celebration of Clinical Research will cover a wide range of topics, feature guest speakers and promotional stands. 

All staff are welcome and everyone who attends will be able to pick up a goody bag. 

Deepali Varma, our Director of Research and Consultant Ophthalmologist, said: "Research is core to the NHS principles and this event is a celebration of STSFT’s commitment to clinical research. 

“It will showcase the fantastic achievements of our staff towards making STSFT an internationally recognised centre for ground-breaking research that will in future improve patient care.”

A host of Trust staff will speak at the event to mark International Clinical Trials Day.

The event will be opened by our Medical Director, Dr Shaz Wahid, who will be followd by Deepali Varma, our Director of Research, and Claire Livingstone, our Head of Research.

Speakers will include mr Maged Habib, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Steve Dodds, Junior Sister/Charge Nurse and Jade Ward, Ophthalmic Photographer, who are based at Sunderland Eye Infirmary.

Dr Tony Rostron, Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine will talk about Embedding Clinical Research in Critical Care on ICCU, followed by a session entitled Developing a Research Culture: The Gastroenterology Experience with Dr Laura Neilson, Consultant Gastroenterologist.

Dr Shalabh Srivastava, Consultant Interventional Nephrologist and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, will head up a lectrue on Clinical and Basic Science Research in Renal Medicine.

There will be a break for refreshments from 2.30pm, with the afternoon session to start at 2.50pm, when Holly Kitching, Deputy Director of Nursing, and  Carly Brown, Lead Research Nurse, will discuss Developing a Dedicated NMAHP Research Agenda at STSFT.

The final talk will be by Dr Yitka Graham, Honorary Specialty Lead, Health Services Research,on Using Academic and Clinical Expertise to set up Impactful Research for Patient Benefit: A Worked Example.
