Please note - staff should not be wearing visors or goggles that are not supplied by the Trust.  This is really important and is for your own protection as we know that all of our PPE meets important health and safety (HSE) quality standards.  There is plenty of PPE stock available and no reason why anyone should be buying their own.  It is also against Trust guidance and policy to wear your own. The only exception to this is the use of your own personal face covering when coming into work until you get to your usual workplace setting within the building and when leaving work.

PPE Videos

Patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19:

This video demonstrates how to don and doff the correct PPE required when caring for a patient with confirmed or suspected  COVID-19 and the patient does not require an Aerosol Generating Procedure (AGP) Alternatively, click here for further guidance.

Mask etiquette

How to wear a mask correctly

Respirator Hoods

Powered respirator hoods should only be used if no fit tested staff are available.

Prior to use staff should have previously had this equipment demonstrated to them and should re-familiarise themselves with all parts of the Jupiter respirator i.e. how to pre-test, turn on and attach / disconnect hood. Integrity of the equipment must be checked before use

A ‘supervision’ system should be used i.e. a third staff member to assist the clinical worker and buddy with the removal of PPE in the correct order.

Putting on PPE (clinical worker)

Staff should wear the following PPE and don in the following order:

  • Gown
  • Assemble respirator unit as follows:
    • Connect hosing to unit and respirator hood
    • Fasten belt around waist and turn unit on (wait for green light)
    • Apply hood and ensure correct fit
  • Non sterile long sleeved close fitting nitrile gloves over cuff of gown
  • Standard nitrile gloves over first pair of gloves

Removal of PPE (clinical worker)

After use, it should be assumed that PPE may be contaminated and an inappropriate removal procedure could expose the wearer.

The removal process will require a Supervisor and a buddy to ensure PPE is removed in an order that minimises the potential for cross-contamination.

Clinical worker will inform buddy when they are ready to leave room. Supervisor will advise clinical worker of order of PPE removal as follows:

  • Grasp the outside of the glove with the opposite gloved hand and peel off. Hold the removed glove in gloved hand. Slide the fingers of the ungloved hand under the remaining glove at the wrist. Peel the remaining glove off over the first glove and discard
  • Clinical worker unties side straps of surgical gown
  • Buddy stands behind clinical worker, and loosens Velcro at neck of clinical workers gown
  • Buddy holds battery pack of respirator
  • Supervisor instructs clinical worker to unfasten respirator belt
  • Remove second pair of gloves and gown together and roll inside out using a peeling motion, folding the gown over itself from top to bottom. Dispose of as gown/gloves into clinical waste bin
  • Gel hands
  • Buddy to continue to hold battery pack and disconnect tubing from the hood and switches off respirator pack
  • Clinical worker to remove respirator hood by holding sides of headband and removing hood in a forwards motion into a suitable container/ trolley awaiting decontamination
  • Perform hand decontamination
  • Clinical worker will then leave the antechamber
  • Buddy to decontaminate the respirator system with Chlorclean/SoChlor prior to placing respirator system into the decontaminated respirator storage box awaiting reuse

For decontamination of Jupiter Respirator see below

Battery has 8 hours of charge and should be charged between uses For additional advice on donning and doffing PPE please refer to “PPE guidance
for COVID 19 flow sheet”

Decontamination advice for Jupiter respirator system

Prior to use the respirator system should be fully checked prior to use including integrity check of all components Following each use the respirator system is to be decontaminated using Chlorclean (allow a contact time of 2 minutes)/ Sochlor (allow contact time of 4 minutes) then rinse and dry.

  • Respirator tubing - leave plastic cover tube in place and decontaminate
  • Respirator backpack – leave filters in place – clean backpack and external surfaces of filters

The respirator system should be fully checked prior to use including integrity of all components

Headgear

  • Decontaminate inner and outer surfaces of the headgear assembly with a Clinell wipe

Motor/Blower Unit and Battery Pack
Leave filters in place and include decontamination of the external surfaces of filters only as part of decontamination of Motor/lower Unit and Battery Pack. Do not disassemble filters and attempt to clean filters. Filters can be used multi-use

  1. Do not allow liquid to enter the air outlet port or the motor housing area.
  2. Use caution if cleaning around the battery pack connector pins where the battery seats on the bottom of the motor/blower unit. Ensure this area and the pins are thoroughly dry before next use or storage.
  3. Clean the outer surfaces of the assembly and battery pack with a clean soft cloth dampened with Chlorclean / Sochlor. Do not soak. Allow contact time (see above), rinse with clean water and dry. Refer to the User Instructions for cleaning details. Do not immerse the motor/blower or battery pack.

Breathing Tube and cover

  1. Clean the breathing tube by wiping it down with a soft cloth with Chlorclean / Sochlor. Do not soak. Allow contact time (see above), rinse with clean water and dry. Where plastic tube covers are in place, clean the tube cover and clean intact.

After Cleaning and Drying

  1. Reassemble unit as described in the User Instructions and recheck integrity of all components
