What we do

The Porter Service is operational at South Tyneside District Hospital, Palmer Community Hospital and St Benedict’s Hospice. 
Services offered:

  • Patient transfer to and from wards and departments
  • Collection and delivery of medications
  • Collection and delivery of blood units
  • Collection and delivery of HSDU equipment 
  • Delivery of stores to all wards and departments
  • Movement of items / disposal of items

Contact Centre

The Porter Contact Centre, based at South Tyneside District Hospital, is operational 24 hours per day and is responsible for the issuing of jobs to Porters whilst ensuring they are issued in priority to ensure an efficient service to all.

Post Room

Porters working within the Post room offer a secure, punctual, trustworthy and friendly service across the organisation.

Services offered:-

  • Sorting and distribution of Internal post 
  • Sorting and distribution of external post
  • Sorting and distribution of Courier post
  • Franking of external post
  • Sorting and distribution of business parcels
  • Delivery and collection service

Stores

Porters working within the Stores are responsible for the delivery of stores and goods to wards and departments in order to ensure adequate stock levels at all times in order to maintain effective services throughout the organisation.

Switchboard

The switchboard service is operational twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year. The service provides patients, visitors, external organisations, health care professionals and emergency services with help and advice.

Services offered:-

  • Answering of incoming calls both internal and external, connecting calls to appropriate staff or wards/departments.
  • Issuing and management of bleeps to authorised users
  • Monitoring of alarms in and out of hours
  • Contact Emergency Services in the instance of a major incident including fire
  • Initiate emergency calls across pagers in the events of cardiac arrests, fire or trauma etc.
